Chirpy Chaps!

 

When: We only see these little bundles of energy a couple of times a year. 

Usually as singles, though sometimes as pairs.

 They continually dance, flit and chirp.

Little Pied Cormorant

  Little Pied Cormorants...

These guys are keen waterway hunters.

When: Little Pied Cormorants can be seen all year round.

Unlike Little Black Cormorants who hunt in packs

Little Pied Cormorants are usually pretty solitary. 

They're either drying themselves...

Perched in a tree, resting to be ready for the next hunt... Or scooting in and under the waters looking for a feed.

Little Pied Cormorants breed in colonies but I haven't seen any around here.

Little Pied Cormorants are one of Australia's most common waterbirds, so you'll usually spot one or two on most days.

Little Black Cormorant

 Little Black Cormorant...

When: The very descriptively named Little Black Cormorants may be seen around the lake throughout the year. 

In summer, these fellas can often be seen in groups of up to around twenty. They dive around and hunt through the shallows of the lake, as can be seen in this video below.

Other shore birds like pelicans, egrets and herons often shadow the cormorant pack, hoping to get in on the feeding action. 

You tend to see individuals and smaller groups during the colder months.

Spangled Drongo

  Spangled Drongos... Australia's native drongo.

When: I've read that these birds are migratory, traveling between New Guinea and Australia. 

Having said that, I've seen them around here pretty much all year round.

The photos on this page have been taken in January, March, April, June and July.

Drongos often appear to be a plain black, but when the sun catches them, their iridescent blue-green spangles really light up.

They're quite chatty birds.

Sulphur Crested Cockatoos

  Sulphur Crested Cockatoos...

Elusive creatures. 

When: You see these guys maybe once a year around the Currimundi Lake area. 

I've seen them in good numbers feeding by the roads between Caloundra and Nambour. But around the Currimundi Lake area I've only seen them in singles.

Like this guy below who stayed around for two days eating passionfruit.
