Sacred Kingfisher

Sacred Kingfisher is another Caloundra beauty.

When: Sacred Kingfishers can be seen all year round. They're usually found in the trees in the dunes along our beaches and, less often, beside our creeks.

They'll often sit still for quite a while, even as you slowly approach them. However, as soon as you get to about 10 metres, they'll move away. It's almost like a force-field!

The poem for this post isn't so much about kingfishers, more a musing about our daily wanderings.

Female Variegated Fairy-Wren

Female Variegated Fairy-wrens may not be as flamboyant as their male counterparts but they're equally beautiful.

There's a small caveat on these pictures because non-mating and juvenile males are hard to tell from females.

This post shows off both female fairy-wrens and some youngsters, including a short video of a pair of babies being fed.

Here's a video of two baby fairy-wrens awaiting dinner.

Male Variegated Fairy-Wrens

The male Variegated Fairywren is sure a beautiful bird. I've decided to do a separate post for the female wrens as the two look very different from each other and both deserve their own page.

You'll encounter these guys in little communal groups with a dominant male & female.

They dart and zoom around in fairly dense undergrowth, pausing then moving on.

These guys will draw your attention when they reel out their fast, musical, metallic trills back and forth amongst each other.

Without being too scientific, I would say we encounter fewer of these guys now than say four years ago.

These little fellas shouldn't be confused with their cousins, the superb fairy-wren that you usually see illustrating mugs and tea-towels. I've never seen any superb wrens around Caloundra.
