Buthcherbirds - Grey

Grey Butcherbirds are nearly as common around here as their pied cousins. these fellas sure have a beautiful song.

When: Grey Butcherbirds live in their territories all year round.

The family of Grey Butcherbirds to which this beauty belonged, ruled the roost around our yard until around 2018.
They used to persecute one stubborn Pied Butcherbird (we called him Barry - turns out, he was a she, but that's another story), who refused to leave its tree next door despite being regularly attacked by the Greys.

That was until one Saturday when Barry suddenly found some allies in a neighbouring family of Pied Butcherbirds. They and the Greys sang at each other and swooped and flew around each other for hours. By the end of the weekend, the Greys had had enough and left the area leaving Barry and a new partner in charge. The other Pieds retreated to their usual territory.

Birds are strange and wonderful!
