Butcherbirds, both grey and pied, have a habit of placing their food on a spike, in the cleft in a tree, on a clothesline or any convenient spot. They might be storing it for later or to hold it tight as they dismember it.
This is a photo of one such 'butcher's block' that a family of grey butcherbirds that live beside Currimundi Lake. They return to it fairly regularly with something new.
