Rainbow Lorikeets

Rainbow Lorikeets are feisty fellows with a bundle of pugnacious personality.

When: Rainbow lorikeets are very common around Caloundra and can be seen - and heard - all year round.

This post shows off these gaily coloured jokers in their usual style but click here for a surprise colour morph you certainly don't see every day.

But don't stop there. Keep going for some photos and videos of them nesting  and also splashing comically in a birdbath.

Now, let's have a little verse.

They rarely take a backwards step with other birds and will happily tag-team up to take on much larger corellas at the bird feeder and win. The corellas always seem much surprised at the outcome!

Rainbow lorikeets usually nest in tree holes like this one below.

If they see you as they are leaving, they'll freeze until they think it's safe (which sure makes taking photos easy).

When they return to the hole, they often fly straight in.

This hole, beside Currimundi Lake, is used very regularly but of course it's hard to tell how many different pairs use it over the year.

And now, just for fun, here's a video of a lorikeet having a good bath - with an unexpected consequence.....
